Introduction
Operate and control the steeped maize processes to manufacturing code specifications in a safe environment. The Steeps Plant is critical in the sustainability of the mill and operational excellence strategies to achieve budgeted targets in plant capacity utilization, efficiencies, quality, utilities and cost control whilst engaging and retaining talent.
Job description

The key outputs this role contributes to the business:

Financial

·        Achieve production targets.

·        Proactively report product spillage and leaks to minimise financial losses.

Business Processes

·        Ensures plant effectiveness by carrying out critical process checks.

·        Adjusting operation parameters.

·        Taking WIP dips daily/monthly and converting dips to actual. Complete daily inventories for chemical stock available on floor for the plant.

·        Product transfer

·        Draw product effluent samples as per procedure. 

 Customers

·        Demonstrates understanding of internal and external customer needs, expectations and delivers accordingly. 

Sustainability

·        Works in a way to ensure compliance with safety, health, environment and community legislation.

·        Complies with workplace policies, procedures and work instructions.

·        Ensures plant is maintained in hygienic conditions

Plant administration

·        Read the Instruction Book, Written Shift report book and Plant Operators Report and identify plant and process problems encountered and discuss the action taken to rectify the problems.

·        Complete Steeps Plant Log Sheets and Daily Shift report book regarding In process analyses, production downtimes and reasons.

·        Complete Master Cleaning Schedules for the Plant.  Complete Job Cards to rectify faulty equipment.

·        Complete Dangerous Task Permits –

Ø  Vessel Entry

Ø  High Places

·        Supply relevant information to the Production Coordinator to ensure continuous operation of the plant.

Production Tasks

·        Perform hygiene housekeeping inspections and rectify deviations.

·        Limit and control product losses, chemical usages and water consumption to standard by taking meter readings and specified samples.

·        Take samples of the Process and analyse them as required.

·        Send relevant samples of the Process to the Laboratory for analyses.

·        Ensure that there are adequate chemicals available in the plant.

·        Clean and sanitize the plant when required.

·        Clean Maize cleaner once per shift.

·        Wash steep tank out after grinding a tank.

·        Fill up the Sulphur Bin and remove blockages when required.

Pre-start checks

·        Inspect all plant equipment to ensure that it is in a safe working condition.

·        Produce the grade of product as per production schedule or instruction.

Starting up the Plant

·        Transfer maize from the silo’s to the steep tanks.

·        Transfer steeped maize to the 1st Grind tank.

·        Operate and control the Sulphur burner system.

·        Operate and control the offval system.

Shutting down the Plant

·        Stop to transfer maize from the silo’s to the steep tanks.

·        Stop to transfer steeped maize to the 1st Grind tank.

·        Shut down the Sulphur burner system.

·        Shut down the offval system.

Quality

·        Work according to Plant work instructions and follow prescribed manufacturing recipes.

·       

Minimum requirements

National  Diploma: Chemical Engineering 

Experience:

1-3 years operation experience

Basic wet-milling training experience will be an advantage.
